Framing Velázquez at the Prado Museum in early 20th century. The frame gilding and restoration workshop in 1901
Main Article Content
Abstract
Studies on the history of the Prado Museum have traditionally focused on the museographical and educational aspects of the institution but have rarely been interested in the picture framing of its paintings. This article analyses the intervention in 1899 by framing house “Marquina” in the Queen´s Hall, which was turned into a monographic room for the painter Velázquez. New documents have clarified the reasons as to why frames weren´t made during this procedure. The changes undergone in the framing of the majority of Velázquez´s paintings have been analysed, especially the fortune of the framing of “Las Meninas”. Furthermore, a framing and gilding workshop installation has been identified, giving documentary evidence of the needs which brought about its creation, together with Federico Amutio y Amil, a key figure in the history of restoration and museography at the Prado Museum.
