Abstract

Historicism reinvented the cultural inheritance of European countries in order to configure the visual depiction of each national identity. But it had another aim: dressing up industrial art productions to make them competitive. The debate between Tradition and Modernism was also foughtwithin the Historicism school of thought. It was a wide perspective in which different ideologies, philosophies and politics looked for an answer, always among the gentry, that led to varied answers to the challenge of building the Europe of the Bourgeois Revolution.
