Abstract

At the turn of the 20th century, debates on social consequences of the Industrial Revolution had a significant place in Design, a new profession closely related to industry. These debates addressed essential topics for Design development as professional discipline. Some of the most meaningful issues were craftsmanship versus industrial production, personal expression versus collective artwork, universality versus nationalism and ornament versus lack of it.
