Stained glass. Definition, functions and tipologies
Main Article Content
Abstract
The magnificent universe of what we know as stained glass is as vast as it is unknown. Even though Spain has one of the most important heritages of this art worldwide, its presence in the media, museums, exhibitions and educational programmes is very scarce, as are the inventories and academic studies on this field. This article explores this fascinating art in depth, in an attempt to bring it closer to the general public, while helping to clarify what we understand by stained glass, from an etymological definition of the word to the uses and importance of stained glass throughout history. Along this route we will see the different types of stained glass windows, classified according to their construction technique and materials, their uses and functions and the themes or motifs represented.
