The Meninas. A familiar clothing
Main Article Content
Abstract
This article analyzes and reflects on clothing, which is present at Velázquez's painting, Las meninas. From here, the representational space is described as theatre space in which social types and characters are depicted by their way of clothing, as well as the basic roles that they followed within the court. Based on them, the article makes comparisons between other artworks, in order to show the clothing present as a whole, and its social status. It is analyzed by social significance’s order, from Infanta Margarita, her accompanying entourage, palace’s civil servants and jesters, as well as the dog’s standing and the painter himself, so ending with the relationship between the kings and the artist and the painting’s demand of white collar-profession, by using a symbolic form on suit.
