José María Florit’s historicist reconstructions of the chapter halls and the Habsburgs palace at the Royal Monastery of El Escorial.
Main Article Content
Abstract
At the beginning of the XX century José María Florit undertook the interior renovation of the palace of the Habsburgs of El Escorial to its original setting during the reign of King Philip II. This task was addressed by acquiring an extensive documentation which was followed by the publication of an exemplary article for the period which justified his decisions and provided documentation for the provenance of each piece. His work demonstrates that he was aware of the new historicist museum trends. As far as the ornamentation of the palace is concerned - which would eventually be opened for the public-, the decorative arts had a major importance. The strength of his reconstruction lies in the fact that the atmosphere in which King Philip II lived was recreated, a setting kept as it was until today.
