Abstract
In 1870, Salvador Sanpere i Miquel (1840-1915 granted a trip to Britain by the Provincial de Barcelona, which was one of the great landmarks in the renewal of industrial arts in Spain as it has accepted for all specialized scholars. This paper analyses the motives for this trip as well as other subsequent actions of promoting industrial arts & books and articles, further trips and also public lectures-, all of which result from their social convictions related to the progressive and republican ideology. Sanpere defends the British example as a model for the renewal of the industry. He also emphasizes the need for a policy of exhibitions, the importance of renewing the teaching of applied arts and establishing a specialized library. Another major point of focus is the compilation of a local ornamentation grammar, demonstrating his accurate concept of style in the eclectic decorative context of the nineteenth century.
